INSPIRATION
The Kardashev Scale is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy they are able to use. It was proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964. The scale has three designated categories:
- Type I Civilization (Planetary Civilization): This civilization can use and store all of the energy available on its planet, including energy from the Sun, geothermal energy, and other natural sources.
- Type II Civilization (Stellar Civilization): A civilization that can harness the total energy of its parent star. This concept is often associated with the theoretical Dyson Sphere, a structure which would encompass a star to capture its power output.
- Type III Civilization (Galactic Civilization): This civilization could control energy on the scale of its entire host galaxy, utilizing and controlling energy from numerous stars.
Extensions to the scale have been proposed, including higher levels that could harness energy from multiple galaxies or even the entire Universe, but these are purely speculative. The scale is a theoretical framework and more a tool of science fiction and futurism than a practical measure of current technological capabilities. Humanity is currently not at Type I but is often considered to be at a fractional level, somewhere around 0.7 on the scale, as it can harness a portion of the energy available on Earth.
